🧐 What is Attack on Titan: Anime and Manga

Attack on the Titans is a manga and anime series about humanity’s last stand against huge man-eating monsters. The story takes place in a world where humans live behind three huge walls that protect them from the Titans, which are colossal creatures with no intelligence or motive other than to eat humans. If you’ve never heard of this popular Japanese manga or read any of its many spin-offs (manga), it’s time to get started! Here’s everything you need to know about Attack on Titan:

Attack on Titan is an anime and manga series. It is written by Hajime Isayama, who also worked on Shingeki no Kyojin and Boku no Kanojo ga Majime Sugiru Shojo Bitch na Ken (My Girlfriend is a Faithful Virgin Bitch). The manga was first published in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shonen magazine; it is still ongoing, with over 50 volumes published so far.

The anime adaptation was produced by Wit Studio, Production I.G and Toho Animation; the first season began airing in Japan on MBS-TBS’s nightly Noitamina programming block in April 2013. The second season began airing in April 2017; both seasons were simulcast worldwide outside of Asia by Funimation Entertainment with English dubbing performed by voice actors from Blue Water Studios using their Houston-based recording studio under license from Funimation. Both seasons have been licensed for North American distribution by Funimation itself.

Attack on Titan Characters

  • Eren Jaeger: The protagonist of Attack on Titans! He is a boy with a burning desire to kill all the Titans and save mankind. Eren was born with the gift of being able to become a Titan himself, but has not yet been able to control it.
  • Mikasa Ackermann: Eren’s adopted sister and adoptive mother figure, Mikasa is a skilled fighter who can take on anyone who tries to challenge her strength. Like Eren, all she wants is to kill each and every one of those damn titans and save humanity from extinction once and for all.
  • Armin Arlert: This character is known as “the mastermind” because he has helped strategize on how humans should fight the Titans in order to better protect themselves. Armin also has great ideas about the cause of all these monsters in the first place, but we won’t go into that now, as he’s nice enough not to spoil anything if you read this article before watching any episodes.

Attack on Titan Story and Plot

Attack on Titans is set in a world where humanity lives behind giant walls to protect themselves from the Titans, giant humanoid creatures that devour humans for food. The story centers on Eren Yeager and his adopted sister Mikasa Ackermann, who join the army to fight the Titans after their hometown is attacked and Eren’s mother devoured.

In September 2015, Kodansha Comics announced that it had licensed Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan manga for English-language publication in North America. The series was published in 12 omnibus volumes between February 4, 2012 and April 5, 2017, with new editions scheduled for release every 2 months, starting with volume 1 on May 2, 2018 (the same day as the third season).

Attack on Titan Chapters

  • Chapters are the individual issues of a manga. They usually appear in a monthly magazine, and each chapter has its own title.
  • When you read a complete series, you will notice that some chapters have different names than others; these are called volumes. Some series have only one volume and others have many volumes (for example, Attack on Titan has 19 volumes). A manga can span hundreds of chapters over several decades.

Manga, Anime and Movies of Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan has been adapted to different media. The original manga, written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama, was first published in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen magazine in 2009. It has since been published in 78 volumes, including the latest volume released on August 9, 2018. In addition to the manga there have been three anime adaptations and several spin-off books, as well as video games based on the series.

The first anime adaptation aired from April 7, 2013 to September 29, 2013 for thirteen episodes; it was followed by two compilation movies titled Attack on Titan: Part 1 – Guren no Yumiya and Attack on Titan: Part 2 – Jiyuu no Tsubasa which were released on November 22, 2014 and June 27, 2015 respectively (the English versions were called Wings of Freedom). This was followed by another 12-episode season called Attack on Titan Season 2 which began airing on April 1, 2017 until September 23, 2017; it was then followed by two more compilation movies titled Attack On Titan: End Of The World (released on December 1, 2018) and Return Of The Kings (released on February 1, 2019).
