🧐 What is Berserk: Anime and Manga
To say that Berserk is a dark manga and anime series is an understatement. It is a dark and disturbing journey into the mind of its protagonist, Guts, who has a tragic past that he has been trying to escape from all his life. Warning: there is violence and sexual content in this series that may not be suitable for children.
The Black Swordsman (黒い剣士 Kuroi Kenshi).
The protagonist of the story is Guts, a mercenary who has a prosthetic arm and a sword. His prosthetic arm is called Dragon Slayer. He is one of the most skilled swordsmen in all of Japan. Guts is also strong and resourceful. When you’re ready to start reading about Berserk, you can go to our website for free access to all three volumes:
The Golden Age Arc (黄金時代編 Ōgon Jidai Hen).
The Golden Age Bow (黄金時代編 Ōgon Jidai Hen) is about Guts’ journey to retrieve his sword, which was stolen from him. He meets a young girl named Puck and finds his sword, but loses Puck. He then meets a group of mercenaries who fight against the king.
The Black Swordsman & The Lost Children (黒い剣士&迷子の子供たち Kuroi Kenshi & Maigo no Kodomotachi).
When the Black Swordsman and Guts’ group arrive at the village, they find it in ruins. A young girl named Erica explains that her father was killed by a bandit named Donovan while trying to protect his daughter. Erica then reveals that she has encountered apostles of the Hand of God before, and claims that they use fear as a weapon. Despite this claim, she allows Guts and company to stay at her house while they plan their next move. As they dine together later that night, Erica asks him if Guts can help her find her missing brother Grifon, who was kidnapped by Donovan five years ago.
Guts agrees on one condition: if he finds Grifon alive, he must kill him himself because otherwise he will never be able to get over this experience (assuming, of course, that Grifon is still alive after five years). Erica reluctantly agrees to these conditions, but secretly decides not to tell anyone else about this condition until after she finds him so as not to worry them unnecessarily.
Band of the Falcon (鷹の団 Taka No Dan).
The Band of the Falcon (鷹の団, Taka no Dan?) is a group of mercenaries in Berserk who fought for Midland during the Hundred Years’ War. It was led by Griffith and his estranged lover Caska. The band returns in its new form, The Band of the Hawk, with Guts as leader and Griffith now known as Femto.
The Battle for Doldrey (ドルドレイの戦い Dordorei no Tatakai).
The Battle for Doldrey (ドルドレイの戦い Dordorei no Tatakai) is the title of episode 10 of Berserk. It was released in Japan on May 1, 1997 and in the United States on October 16, 2002. Doldrey is a fortress city located on a hill overlooking a river valley. The fortress has been taken by Griffith’s army and is now considered a symbol of his power, so when the count launches an assault to recapture it he makes sure to bring with him an overwhelming force: thousands of soldiers and dozens of cannons. But Griffith will not be easily defeated: he is also prepared! In addition to having his own army, he also has the help of some old friends who have returned from fighting abroad: Caska, Judeau and Wyald among others….
The Black Swordsman & Conviction (黒き剣士と信念 Kuroki Kenshi to Shinnen).
Conviction, Berserk #6 (along with Berserk: The Black Swordsman and Conviction) is a manga volume written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. It was originally published by Hakusensha on April 20, 1999 in Japan and translated into English by Dark Horse Comics on July 13, 2005. It contains a selection of chapters from the seventh through eleventh story arcs of Berserk, as well as an all-new chapter not seen before in any other edition of the series.
The Endless Eclipse (終わりなき日食 Owari-naki Nichiyōshi).
The Endless Eclipse (終わりなわりなき日食 Owari-naki Nichiyōshi) is a single-episode story that takes place between the events of the Arc of Conviction and the Falcon Arc of the Millennium Empire. In this story, Casca has been rescued from her prison by Griffith and Guts. However, she is still suffering from having lost her sanity during her torture at the hands of Zodd and has no memory of who either of them are. She thinks she is an ordinary girl who was kidnapped while taking a walk around the city with her mother, until she begins to have memories of her life as a mercenary with Guts and his companions. These memories help Casca regain some sanity, but they also cause her great anguish, as they force her to realize that she once loved someone more than Griffith, and that person is none other than Guts himself!
The prey hunted by hawks (鷹の狩る獲物 Taka no Karu Emono).
The Prey Hunted by Falcons (鷹の狩る獲物 Taka no Karu Emono) is the third episode of the anime Berserk. It is based on the manga chapter of the same name, which was originally published at the end of volume 2. The episode premiered in Japan on March 16, 1997 and was released in North America on March 3, 2003.
