🧐 What is Dororo (2019): Anime and Manga
Dororo is a Japanese manga series created by manga creator Osamu Tezuka in the late 1960s. The manga was first published in Japanese by Akita Shoten in its Weekly Shōnen Champion magazine from September 1967 to October 1968. The story is based on the Japanese folk tale of Hyakkimaru, a samurai whose body parts are stolen by demons, forcing him to resort to prosthetics in order to deal with them. Hyakkimaru and Dororo travel together to recover Hyakkimaru’s 48 body parts that were given to the demons before he was born.
The story has been adapted into several anime and live-action films since 1968, as well as two television series produced by Toei Animation (1972) and NHK (1977).
One day, Hyakkimaru and his mother go to see a monk named Kakusuke for help. The monk tells them that he once saved a boy from drowning and that, in exchange for saving his life, the boy gave Kakusuke some of his body parts so that Kakusuke could live forever, but only if Kakusuke returned them to him once he was dead. However, when a criminal later killed this boy (because “he was too much to bear”), he again gave away those same body parts in exchange for eternal life…. and now they are gone forever!
